A competency is a measurable pattern of abilities, behaviors, and other characteristics that a person needs to have to perform work roles or occupational functions successfully. Using competencies as a new approach to talent management provides consistency, fairness, and the ability to develop our employees more effectively.
Why are we incorporating competencies into our job descriptions at this time?
WyoCloud-HCM is built on best practices and incorporates a competency model. Competencies are used in the following sections within WyoCloud-HCM: job and model profile; performance management; training; succession planning talent management. They are also used as selection criteria in recruitment.
Competencies focus on the “how” (as opposed to the what) of performing job functions. They concentrate on the aptitudes the person needs to be successful.
The Competency Dictionary we will be using has been long established and vetted by the Society of Human Resources and other Human Resource experts. For a more in-depth description please review the Competency Dictionary with Key Behaviors document.
Along with the three universal core competencies of Inclusion, Communication and Striving for Excellence, each job description or job group will have a set of defined competencies.
If you have any questions about the competencies that have been associated to jobs you supervise, please contact any member of the Class/Comp department.
For further information on competencies, there is an Understanding Competencies training in the Employee LearnCenter. It is located in the Human Resources grouping of trainings.
