The University of Wyoming is known for bucking the system. When it first opened its doors to 42 students and five faculty members in September 1887, Wyoming was still a territory. Befitting to the University of “The Equality State” both the student and faculty populations included women from day one. The campus consisted of one building built on the outskirts of town in Laramie's city park, where it still stands today. Old Main held classes, the library and administrative offices during the first years of the university's existence. Expansion and unwavering progress were soon to follow.
Over the last century, UW has grown into a nationally recognized land-grant research
and teaching institution with over 700 expert faculty, top-ranked academics, world-class
facilities and a beautiful campus sprawling more than 1,000 acres. We still remember
where we started though and strive to keep the traditions of the west alive.
The University Archives at the American Heritage Center is a great resource to access historical materials about important events and thousands
of photographs - just another way we continue to buck the system.
