Verify that the Automatic Updates Service is Running
Introduction
This document provides the steps necessary to determine if the Automatic Updates Service is running on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer.
Procedure
- In Windows XP, click the Start menu button, right-click My Computer, and click Manage. Or, for Windows 2000 and the Windows XP Classic Start menu, on the Desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, and click Manage.
- In the Computer Management window, in the left-hand pane, double-click to expand Services and Applications, and click Services.
- If you receive the error message, "No administrable services found", click OK, and continue to the next step.

- Verify that Automatic Updates appears on the list of services. If it appears, check the Status column, and verify it says Started.

- If the Status column does not say Started, right-click Automatic Updates, and click Properties.
- In the Automatic Updates Properties (Local Computer) window, in the Startup type box, enter Automatic, and in the Service status section, click Start. Click OK to close the window.
