Verify that the Automatic Updates Service is Running

Introduction

This document provides the steps necessary to determine if the Automatic Updates Service is running on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer.

Procedure

1. In Windows XP, click the Start menu button, right-click My Computer, and click Manage. Or, for Windows 2000 and the Windows XP Classic Start menu, on the Desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, and click Manage.
    
2. In the Computer Management window, in the left-hand pane, double-click to expand Services and Applications, and click Services.
    
3. If you receive the error message, "No administrable services found", click OK, and continue to the next step.

4. Verify that Automatic Updates appears on the list of services. If it appears, check the Status column, and verify it says Started.

5. If the Status column does not say Started, right-click Automatic Updates, and click Properties.
    
6. In the Automatic Updates Properties (Local Computer) window, in the Startup type box, enter Automatic, and in the Service status section, click Start. Click OK to close the window.
