Use the Event Viewer to Check for SUS Updates

Introduction

If your campus computer participates in Software Updates Service (SUS), you can determine if your computer was patched by checking the Event Viewer on your computer. If you were logged off during the patch process, these directions will be useful as there will be no indication that anything happened. If you had your computer locked, you may see a prompt asking you to reboot. In either case, you can follow these steps to be sure what action was taken.

Additional information on SUS can be found on the SUS Frequently Asked Questions page (www.uwyo.edu/askit/displaydoc.asp?askitdocid=487&parentid=1).

Procedure

  1. Open Event Viewer.

    • In Windows XP, click the Start menu button, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Event Viewer.

    • In Windows 2000, click the Start menu button, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Event Viewer.

  2. In the Event Viewer window, click the System log in the console tree in the left-hand pane.

  3. In the right-hand pane, under the Source heading, look for Automatic Updates; under the Category heading, look for Installation; under the Event heading, look for 18, 19, and 21.

    1. Event 18 reports that the updates were downloaded and are ready to be installed. If you double-click on the event, you will see a description similar to the following in the Description box:  "Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for installation. This computer is currently scheduled to install these updates on Thursday, December 11, 2003 at 3:00 AM."

    2. Event 19 reports that installation was successful, and if you double-click the event, you will see a description similar to the following in the Description box: "Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update."

    3. Event 21 will report that a restart is required and will list a description similar to the following in the Description box: "Restart Required: To complete the installation of the following updates, the computer must be restarted. Until this computer has been restarted, Windows cannot search for or download new updates."

Tips

  1. If Events 18 and 19 are listed, your computer was updated correctly.

  2. You may see Event 21 if a patch was installed that required a reboot. Patches that do not require a reboot will not create Event 21.

  3. You can tell that your computer restarted by looking at the events immediately following Event 21. You should see Events 6006, 6009, and 6005. These Events tell you that the Event log service was stopped, Windows started up (MS Windows version), and the Event log service started.
