THE VIRTUAL EDGE: Lab 17 Enzyme-Mediated Biochemical Activities of Bacteria: Physiological Testing III

Organisms introduced/further discussed in this lab and their key biochemical properties:

Staphylococcus species are catalase positive

  • Staphylococcus aureus: halotolerant, ferments mannitol, coagulase+, b-hemolytic, nitrate+
  • Staphylococcus epidermidis: halotolerant, does not ferment mannitol, coagulase-, nitrate+

Micrococcus species are also catalase positive

  • Micrococcus luteus: halotolerant, nitrate-, forms pigmented colonies

Streptococcusspecies are catalase negative

  • Streptococcus pyogenes: b-hemolytic, Taxos A sensitive, nitrate-
  • Streptococcus agalactiae: b-hemolysis, Taxos A resistant, CAMP+, nitrate-
  • Streptococcus mitis: a-hemolytic, Taxos P resistant, nitrate-
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae: a-hemolytic, Taxos P sensitive, nitrate-

Enterococcus species are also catalase negative

  • E. faecalis: bile esculin hydrolysis, nitrate-

Enterobacteriaceae (enterics)are oxidase negative

  • Escherichia coli: glucose+, lactose+, indole+, nitrate+
  • Proteus mirabilis: glucose+, H 2S+, urease+, motile
  • Shigella dysenteriae: glucose+, H 2S-, urease-, nonmotile, nitrate+

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is oxidase positive

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa: nonfermentative, H 2S-, urease +/-, motile, nitrate+
