Middle Level Math (MMA)
Masters of Natural Science
- Mission: To expand math content knowledge and appropriate pedagogy for instruction at the
middle-level grades
- What: A program designed specifically for teachers to expand math content knowledge and
appropriate pedagogy for instruction at the middle-level grades
- Coursework may begin during spring, summer, or fall semesters
- Spring and fall classes are taught via distance learning on WyoCourses in the evening
- Summer classes are taught in Laramie for three weeks starting in June
- Who: Current teachers who would like to obtain a middle-level math endorsement and have
at least 2 years of teaching experience
- Why: Earn a Master of Science degree with a concentration in Middle-level Mathematics Education.
The content courses can be used as professional development towards meeting the federal
definition of a "highly qualified" teacher
Application Deadlines
Applications deadlines are by 11:59 p.m. on the dates below (or 11:59 p.m. the following
Monday if the date falls on a weekend) for each semester:
- April 1st to begin in the summer
- August 1st to begin in the fall
- November 1st to begin in the spring
Scholarships are available as funding allows. Contact the SMTC for information.
This program is a Gainful Employment program.
Master's Option
The Master's in Natural Science - Middle Math program includes the following coursework
and projects:
- 24 credits of core courses in mathematics and mathematics education
- 6 credits of appropriate graduate-level mathematics and research courses
- Completion of a Plan B (non-thesis) project
Core Courses
Students can start the program during any semester. The program is on a two-year rotation
where course offerings alternate depending on whether it's an even or an odd year.

- NASC 5170/MATH 5170 Connecting Geometry (3 credits)

Even Number Year Program Requirements (2024, 2026)
Spring
- NASC 5140/MATH 5140 Numbers and Operations (3 credits)
Summer (in Laramie)
- NASC 5215 Technology (3 credits)
- NASC 5185 Analysis of Data (3 credits)
Fall
- NASC 5160 Social and Historical Issues (3 credits)
Suggested Courses
- NASC 5670 Research Methodology (4 credits) is offered synchronously online during the Fall semester
in the evening
- NASC 5810 Middle Level Science and Mathematics Practicum (required for teachers who are not
currently teaching middle level science/math; 3 credits) is offered online synchronously
in the spring semester of even years (2024, 2026, 2028, etc.)
- NASC 5961 Plan B Research (1 to 4 credits) is offered as needed.
