THE VIRTUAL EDGE: Lab 15 Enzyme-Mediated Biochemical Activities of Bacteria: Physiological Testing I

Organisms introduced/further discussed in this lab

Gram-positive cocci:

Staphylococcus spp.

  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Staphylococcus epidermidis
  • Staphylococcus saprophyticus

Micrococcus spp.

  • Micrococcus luteus

Streptococcus spp.

  • Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Streptococcus agalactiae
  • Streptococcus mutans
  • Streptococcus mitis
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae

Enterococcus spp.

  • Enterococcus faecalis
  • Enterococcus faecium

Gram-negative bacilli:

Enterobacteriaceae:

  • Escherichia coli
  • Shigella dysenteriae
  • Proteus mirabilis
  • Klebsiella pneumoniae
  • Salmonella typhi

Pseudomonas

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Pseudomonas fluorescens

It may be helpful to prepare (or add to current) flash cards for each of the organisms introduced in this lab. The organism search on the course web cite will be helpful with this task. Remember that it is important to know how to write the scientific name (complete genus and species) of each of the organisms, for example, Stahylococcus aureus (It should be underlined if written by hand). Also include the distinguishing biochemical/physiological properties of each organism on your flash cards. This material will be covered on the next practical exam.
