Mursion Augmented Reality

Avatars for Teaching, Coaching and Leadership

Mursion® augmented reality lets UW pre-service teachers and practicing educators apply and improve essential skills with “real” individuals without the pressure of real-world consequences.

Most are surprised when they first encounter the Mursion augmented reality classroom. This is not a video game and there is no controller.

The student avatars on the screen bring real personalities and respond directly to what’s being said. Here, technology allows for interactions that can be more human and insightful, because mis-steps become stepping stones to deeper learning.

Empathy and compassion come into play during scenarios that can be dialed up from 1 (basic) to 11 (hard). A faculty member is always present, and multiple rounds of practice and feedback make do-overs possible.

Mursion has the distinction of being the first innovation approved through the UW Trustees Education Initiative. The College of Education piloted the technology in 2018 in the Teacher as Practitioner course (EDST 3000).

The UW College of Education is one of only about 65 educator preparation programs in the country using this technology. Mursion is also used by leaders in business, healthcare, and other high-stakes careers.

More than 25 Mursion augmented reality simulations can be integrated into courses to reinforce instructional techniques, and customized scenarios can be developed.

Besides the upper elementary classroom setting, Mursion provides simulation environments for middle school classrooms, special education interactions, and adult interactions, such as education conferences, parent meetings, or training for principals to give feedback to teachers.

School of Teacher Education faculty first concentrated on classroom management skills and have since broadened use of Mursion to methods, graduate-level courses, and content-specific lessons. Within the UW-E4 framework, students might encounter customized ethics scenarios or students with special needs. Mursion has already been put into play as a recruitment activity.

The goal is to strategically embed Mursion experiences throughout all four UW-E4 stages and in all education programs (e.g. elementary, secondary, educational studies) to give students low-risk opportunities to demonstrate and apply competencies the profession requires.
