Office of the Provost Updates: Week of 6.02.25
Published June 02, 2025
Dear Colleagues,
Campus is definitely moving into summer mode and I hope you’ve been enjoying some
time outside in Wyoming or traveling to your favorite locations.
Last week, the Reorganization Committee for the School of Computing (SoC) began its
formal work in accordance with UW Regulation 2-13. This committee has been charged
with transitioning the SoC from its current status as an incubated unit within the
College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (CEPS) to an independent academic unit
reporting directly to Academic Affairs. The transition, approved by the Board of Trustees
in April, supports the School’s role as a campus-wide hub for interdisciplinary computing
research, teaching, and engagement. The committee will deliver its plan by June 27,
and we are grateful for the members’ leadership and service on this critical endeavor.
We are also pleased to share that the national search for the next Dean of the College
of Engineering and Physical Sciences is officially underway. The search committee
has been formed through a combination of nominations, self-nominations, and direct
invitations to ensure broad representation and expertise across the college and stakeholder
groups. The committee’s first meeting will occur this month to finalize the position
description, with a launch of national recruitment planned for mid-summer. We will
share the full list of committee members and additional details about the search process
in the coming weeks. Thank you to all who are contributing to this important effort.
Our final New Student Day of the summer will take place Friday, June 13. As of now,
116 students and their families are expected to attend. Morning sessions will be hosted
by colleges across campus, with tabling, advising, and registration occurring in the
Union and Coe Library throughout the afternoon. If your schedule allows, please consider
stopping by the Union to welcome our new students and their families; it makes a meaningful
difference. I also want to express my appreciation to our advising managers and teams,
whose dedication has made this summer’s onboarding events such a success. Thank you
for your continued commitment to student success.
I hope to see you sometime this summer.
Sincerely,
Scott
