Looking to get ahead or graduate early? Maybe falling behind and needing to catch up? Summer session is a terrific way to knock out some of your toughest college courses. As a student athlete, with a busy golf schedule I have taken advantage of my summer and winter breaks to get ahead in my classes and am on track to graduate a year early!
If graduating early doesn’t interest you, here are some other reasons why summer session is beneficial for students. By taking one to two courses each summer or one over J-term, you can:
Set yourself apart from your class.
Graduate early – adding 6 credits in summer equals a full semester over your college career.
Catch up – maybe on a tough class you previously withdrew from.
Complete courses faster – think 6 weeks instead of 4 months.
Use summer session as a summer pastime – keep good study habits year-round.
Summer provides great opportunities for student-athletes as well, with a demanding
in season sports schedule, students can take some stress off and take a summer course
to lighten their semester load. With my busy travel schedule, taking classes over
both summer and J-term lightened my semester load immensely and allowed me to get
on track to graduate early.
It’d also be a fantastic opportunity for student-athletes whose sport requires them
to be in Laramie over the summer for training or camps. With all the extra time off
or downtime over summer, it is an effortless way for student athletes to complete
courses, get ahead and catch up while being on campus. Nearly two-thirds of summer
courses are offered online, so there’s plenty of options for athletes not on campus
too.
After a long semester, many students look forward to a break. With the six-week format
of many summer session courses, you may be able to take a much needed break AND get
ahead. Starting a class in the second, six-week term of summer, students can take
some time off, but still take a course over the summer session.
Students during school semesters are overwhelmed with courses, internships, extracurriculars
and more! Even taking just one summer class in July can help you space out your semester
and alleviate some of the stress during the school year. I know it only benefited
me and alleviated my semester stress, and workload.
With so many academic programs offering summer session courses, the flexible formats
to study online or on campus, and a chance to really focus on specific subjects, summer
classes were an easy decision for me and can be for you as well!
