Education and Outreach

Bringing the archives to you

The AHC takes pride in supporting the educational mission of the University of Wyoming. We offer instructional support for K–12 and University of Wyoming educators alike, from research classes to unit development assistance. As the host of Wyoming History Day, we're a research and discovery nexus for students participating in the competition. We also host events that spotlight history and our collections all year long, including academic talks, movie screenings, exhibit openings, and the prestigious annual Rentschler Lecture.

To visit the AHC, submit a request and we'll reach out to coordinate your visit. Classes, community groups, and student organizations are all welcome! Please be aware that the AHC cannot accept walk-in groups. A two-week notice is required for all group visits.

Tours

Classes are welcome to come and take a tour of the AHC's facilities. Tours typically take 20–30 minutes and include the main storage area, the second floor loggia, and the reading room.

Working with archival resources

The AHC has activities related to working with archival materials that students can work through in order to become better acquainted with primary source research. These activities teach students how to use archival materials to answer research questions. These activities typically take twenty to sixty minutes to complete. It is common for the activities to be paired with a tour of AHC facilities. Email ahced@uwyo.edu to inquire about archival activities for your class.

National History Day

National History Day engages students in grades 6–12 in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics. Students produce dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multimedia documentaries and thought-provoking papers based on research related to an annual theme. These projects are then evaluated at local, state, and national competitions. The AHC hosts the state competition, Wyoming History Day, every April. We welcome classes interested in participating in History Day, and can provide instruction in topic exploration and conducting primary reserach.

Grants and Fellowships

AHC Teaching and Research Grants offer an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to pursue independent or collaborative research projects, course development, and symposia that use AHC's resource material. A special award is also available for the dissemination of research and projects. UW students, faculty, academic professionals, staff, and recognized student organizations are all eligible to apply.

Each semester, the AHC also offers undergraduate research awards in the form of a cash prize to the best undergraduate research paper or project based substantially on materials (manuscripts, archives, rare books, photos, maps, audio, film and video, etc.) at the AHC. Nominations should be submitted by faculty members on behalf of their students.
