A museum with Global Perspective, rooted in Wyoming
From its beginnings in the basement of the Visual Arts Building to its place today
as an internationally recognized academic museum, the University of Wyoming Art Museum
has remained committed to one guiding belief: world-class art and ideas belong in
Wyoming.
As the state's academic art museum, we serve audiences ranging from PreK–12 students
and university classes to community members and visitors from around the world. While
we celebrate Wyoming's artistic heritage, our mission is to complement the state's
remarkable regional and Western museums by bringing nationally and internationally
acclaimed artists to Laramie.
Through exhibitions, artist residencies, public programs, and classroom partnerships,
visitors experience works by leading contemporary artists—not only viewing exceptional
art, but often engaging directly with the artists themselves. These meaningful exchanges
are one of the unique strengths of an academic museum.
At the same time, we remain deeply connected to place. Our collections and exhibitions
honor Wyoming's history while encouraging new perspectives on the people, landscapes,
and ideas that continue to shape the American West.
Today, the UW Art Museum proudly contributes to conversations taking place across
the museum field—advancing creativity, education, and access while demonstrating that
museums of international significance can thrive in communities of every size. Thanks
to the generosity of our supporters, Wyoming continues to share its voice with the
world—and the world continues to find its way to Wyoming.
