Dean's Weekly Address

Greetings Staff and Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences,

This time of year is always busy, and I appreciate everyone’s efforts as we head into the final stretch of the semester.

On Saturday, I attended a UW Discovery Day on campus and met with dozens of prospective students and their family members about joining the College of Arts and Sciences. I was pleased with the strong turn out and valuable questions by the students and family members. I appreciate the departments who also attended this event to recruit new students. Recruiting remains a top priority for the college, so please keep up the great efforts to recruit our next cohort of A&S students. Recruiting is important for everyone.

On Wednesday, the A&S Central Committee, A&S Associate Deans, and I attended a full-day meeting where A&S department heads pitched their faculty position requests to the group. This was a valuable day for heads to present their case and Central Committee could ask questions about their requests.  Next week, Central Committee will provide the Dean’s office with a suggested ranked list. By the end of the semester, we intend to announce which positions the college will be able to fill. I am grateful for the work of the Central Committee during this time consuming, but important process.  

Each week I am reminded of how excellent our staff are in the college, and across the university.  Our staff work hard and make UW a great place to be.  It may seem a bit random in today’s message, but I want to say “thank you” again for all that you do.
