Weekly Address

Greetings Staff and Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences,

I'm pleased that Associate Dean Adrienne Freng has expressed interest in serving as Interim Dean during the time I am serving as Interim Provost. Yesterday, all staff and faculty in the College of Arts & Sciences received a survey from Acting Provost Tami Benham-Deal regarding Dr. Freng's qualifications. The survey will close at noon on Monday, November 4. Please take a moment to fill it out.

On Monday I travelled to the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution in Torrington with Rob Colter, who leads the Pathways from Prison program. It was a deeply impactful experience for me. I learned that 96% of the individuals incarcerated in that facility will return to society, and that programs to provide support so that they can be successful is crucial. Education is an important piece of that support and Wyoming is a national leader for programs such as Pathways from Prison. I commend Rob Colter and his team for the important work they do.

Lastly, A&S achieved its goal of 1,200 donors on Giving Day, so as promised, I will be performing George Michael's "Careless Whisper" on the saxophone at the basketball game on November 10 at 2 p.m. during a time out. Not only did we meet our goal of 1,200 donors, we far exceeded it, with more than 1,600 donors! So, get your tickets to the basketball game to hear your dean play some sweet jams. The first 26 seconds of this video will give you a bit of a teaser.

Have a great weekend.

J. Scott Turpen
