Dean's Weekly Address

Greetings Staff and Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences,

On September 30 at 4:30 pm, A&S will be hosting a workshop titled “Building Your Professional Brand” for students. Our featured speakers, Jeannetta Burbridge McNeill and Jodi Lynn Walsh are powerhouse leaders and mentors. Our students will receive great information in this talk on how to be successful after college. Space is limited, so please encourage your students to register as soon as they are able. Learn more about this workshop here.

On Tuesday, I attended an on-campus panel discussion presented by Andrew Garner of the School of Politics, Public Affairs, and International Studies entitled "Governing in a Polarized Environment: Past and Present." The panel consisted of members of the Wyoming and Mississippi State Legislatures. The discussion was thoughtful, and the audience was engaged. There was a good turn out from UW as well as our local community.

On Thursday, I did a television interview with Nashville Public Television for a special that will air on Wyoming Public Television and NPT next summer. The special will document the collaboration between UW art faculty and students and artisans from the functional Western art organization “By Western Hands” in Cody. I’m pleased with the progress of this important collaboration and excited to see how this broadcast showcases our faculty and students.

On Thursday, we also had lunch with our Deans Undergraduate Advisory Council for the first time this year. I got to know the student representatives from each department and learn how their semester is going. We will have several more meetings this year, and I can tell this is going to be a group that his lively discussions. I learn a lot from these students’ perspectives each year.

Enjoy your weekend.

Sincerely,

J. Scott Turpen
