Greetings Staff and Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences,
It was nice to have a shortened work week with the holiday on Monday, but we still got a lot accomplished.
This week we had our first meeting of the A&S Central Committee which is the college advisory committee to the dean. It's made up of A&S faculty as well as two student representatives. We have a great group of seasoned committee members as well as some new members this year. This week the committee heard a run-through of our student speaker's project for the upcoming Honors Convocation on September 27 (this will be a great presentation). They also reviewed some department research expectation documents. Next week they will review sabbatical applications and make recommendations on these applications. I am grateful for their service and look forward to working with them this year.
The dean’s office also hosted our first “New Faculty Lunch” of the year. Each year we invite new faculty in A&S to join the dean’s office for lunch so we can learn how they are doing in the new job, and we can share information about the college. It’s a good opportunity to get to know our new faculty and for them to get to know us. This week our topic was teaching, and we had a nice talk with folks from the Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning. Later this year we’ll discuss RTP, research, and other topics. I find these meetings valuable on many levels and I hope our colleagues agree. We have a fine group of new teachers and scholars.
If you have not yet had a chance to see the latest issue of the A&S annual magazine, Elevations, you can view the digital version at https://issuu.com/uwyo/docs/elevations2024_web. There are many stories about a lot of the great work happening across the college.
Today I’m wearing my UW Cowboy gear as we get ready for our first home game against the University of Idaho. Go Pokes!
Sincerely,
J. Scott Turpen
