Dear Alumni and Friends of the College of Arts & Sciences,

Please enjoy the June 2024 edition of the College of Arts & Sciences Monthly Newsletter. Recently, I traveled to Cody to meet with stakeholders and partners and share all the good work happening across the college. The trip was busy and very productive.

In this issue of the newsletter, you'll learn about a new bachelor's degree launched by the Modern and Classical Languages Department, a new fund to honor our former Dean, a prestigious scholarship awarded to a recent A&S graduate, and many other exciting things from across the college.

Thank you for your continued support of the College of Arts & Sciences.

Sincerely,

UW's International Studies Program in SPPAIS Receives Federal STARTALK Grant for a Summer 2025 Russian Language Camp

UW's STARTALK language camp team in International Studies recently received confirmation of their selection for a new STARTALK grant from the National Security Agency to plan and hold a Wyoming STARTALK Russian Camp in July 2025. This $135,000 grant will provide full funding for a total of 25 high school and college aged students selected from across Wyoming and around the country to spend two weeks at UW in a residential and immersive language camp setting to begin learning the Russian language. UW has had several previous STARTALK grants that have funded Arabic language camps, though as of this year only Russian and Chinese language camps are currently being funded. UW holds a large collections of Russian language texts and cultural materials in libraries and across campus. This summer Russian camp will revive and build upon a long and storied language program at UW.

Summer 2024 Wyoming High School Arabic Camp Takes Place July 13-27

The Arabic and Middle East North Africa Studies Program in SPPAIS has held a summer Wyoming Arabic Camp for high school and college students during several past summers since 2011, with regular summer camps held annually since 2018. In the past, these camps were fully funded through the national STARTALK language camps grant program run by the U.S. National Security Agency. This summer, we will again be holding our annual Summer Wyoming High School Arabic Camp, funded by the Qatar Foundation International. Dates for this year's two-week camp - a residential camp at the Laramie campus drawing students from across Wyoming as well as from several other states - are July 13-27. Space is still open for those entering 9th  grade in fall 2024 to students who graduated this year. The camp is free as all costs except transportation to and from Laramie are covered by our grant. Contact Ms. Taelor Nielsen (tnielse5@uwyo.edu) for more information or visit the website.
