DIY Seed Starting and Garden Design

Learn all the tricks to starting your own seeds and successfully transplanting plants
into your Carbon County garden. This session will include hands-on lessons for starting
seeds, reviewing various DIY light options for indoor seed starting, information on
when and how to plant your seedlings and seeds, and recommendations for designing
your garden space. This class will touch on edibles and ornamentals.

DIY Garden Season Extension

Our Carbon County growing season is short, but across the state backyard gardeners
are learning to extend the season using simple and available materials. Come and learn
as Chuck Mollica, occupational therapist, avid gardener, botanist and horticulturalist
shows us season extension methods such as using cold frames (hoop houses), greenhouses,
frost cover fabrics, perennial/woody crop protection and micro-climate use. We’ll
discuss composting and it's use.

Geologist Al Albin, of USDA-NRCS, will discuss the geologic history of Northeastern
Colorado and how it relates to water wells and water availability. We will learn
about aquifers and specifically focus on the aquifers of the Denver Basin and the
Ogallala aquifer. Mr. Albin will also give an introduction to the Niobrara Formation,
a major target for oil and natural gas drilling in Colorado.
