Natural Resources

Wyoming is a major producer of coal, natural gas, and crude oil. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), Wyoming has been the top coal-producing state since 1986, accounting for about 40% of all coal mined in the United States in 2018. The state holds more than one-third of U.S. coal reserves at producing mines. It also ranks among the top 10 states for both the largest natural gas reserves and the highest marketed natural gas production. Wyoming is the eighth-largest crude oil-producing state in 2018, accounting for nearly 3% of U.S. total crude oil output. In addition, Wyoming sends almost three-fifths of the electricity it produces out of state. In 2018, coal-fired power plants produced about 86% of the state's electricity generation while wind energy was responsible for 9% of the state's generation. The remaining supply was generated from hydroelectric facilities as well as natural gas- and petroleum-fueled generating units. Using the tiles below, you can explore Wyoming specific data on coal, electricity, natural gas, petroleum, and renewable energy.
