Competitions

The CEDAR center and DATDA have fielded many competitors to take part in cybersecurity competitions in order to hone their skills. These competitions can occur online or in person and help participants gain the practical knowledge and skills necessary for the security related workforce.

Cyberforce Competition

The annual Cyberforce Competition is held by the Department of Energy in partnership with the national lab system and places a focus on security for critical infrastructure. Each team receives the virtual and physical infrastructure needed to simulate a working environment in charge of a critical process. Teams must then secure the infrastructure against a live red-team attack scenario.

This event promotes the thinking of how to survive with a mix of modern and outdated equipment as well as prioritizing the security of a system based on its role. Most of the controls managing today's criticial infrastructure are unable to be updated to due license support, inability to disrupt the service, and/or reduced development for installed software.

National Cyber League

"The National Cyber League (NCL) is a biannual cybersecurity competition for high school and college students. The competition consists of a series of challenges that allows students to demonstrate their ability to identify hackers from forensic data, break into vulnerable websites, recover from ransomware attacks, and more. Students compete in the NCL to build their skills, obtain scouting reports of their performance for hiring purposes, and to represent their school." - NCL Website

Students across the Computer Science Department have participated in these games every semester for the past couple years. Spanning seven different areas of cybersecurity, students are able to learn core cybersecurity skills while competing in an exciting national competition. Click here to learn more about NCL an see the events list below for descriptions of our team's results for each semester.

MITRE Logo

"MITRE's eCTF (embedded capture-the-flag) is an embedded security competition that puts participants through the experience of trying to create a secure system and then learning from their mistakes. The main target is a real physical or emulated embedded device, which opens the scope of the challenge to include physical/proximal access attacks. The eCTF is a two-phase competition with attack and defense components. In the first phase, competitors design and implement a secure system based on a set of challenge requirements. The second phase involves analyzing and attacking the other teams’ designs."
