Ian Hammontree
Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering
Assistant Lecturer, Safety Coordinator

My main focus is getting people excited about chemical engineering, and I have the pleasure of doing it at my alma mater! I have taught and continue to teach core chemical engineering coursework, such as Chemical Process Analysis, Chemical Thermodynamics, Unit Operations Laboratory I and II, Process Simulation & Design, Process Dynamics and Control, and Senior Design. I also am the coordinator for the Process Instrumentation and Control Minor, and teach the elective coursework associated with that minor.
I endeavor to have a teaching style that utilizes evidence-based principles centered around active learning. That means that I state learning objectives at the beginning of each class, and try to spend as much time as possible during class doing activities, including polling and clicker questions, interactive discussions, problem-solving, team-based learning, and project-based learning.
I am also involved with our department's outreach and recruiting efforts, which enable me to go into the community to talk about chemical and biomedical engineering with people of all ages. I also develop and bring hands-on activities, so people can experience how cool science and engineering really are!
