The Ph.D. in Education, Higher Educaiton Administration, prepares students for positions as university faculty and institutional researchers.

International Students: Welcome and thank you for your interest in our program! Either a TOEFL score or an IELTS score is acceptable. We require a minimum score of 80 for the online TOEFL exam, with minimum scores of 20 in each subset, and the score must be at least two years current. For the IELTS exam, we require a minimum overall score of 6.5, with minimum scores of 6 in each subset, and the score must be at least two years current.

The Ph.D. program is 81 credit hours. Beginning Spring Semester 2017, we welcome you to take up to six credits of required courses (two courses), no exceptions, as a non-degree seeking student prior to admission. Any hours can be transferred into your program of study if you are admitted within four years of taking the courses. Classes are delivered either on campus, online, or through blended format (online and audio conferencing). Ph.D. students have a campus residency.

How to Apply

There are two application deadlines for this program: January 15 (admission no earlier than the following fall) and September 15 (admission no earlier than the following spring). Applicants must have a master's degree from an accredited institution.

Step 1: Apply to UW and the program through the online applicant portal

  1. Click here to access the UW graduate applicant portal
  2. After completing the initial information page, you will receive an email from the system including a link and your temporary username and password
  3. Please complete the contact, academic, residency information, etc.
  4. Submit the $50 application fee
  5. Submit ALL required documents to the online document portal (applications with missing documents will not be considered)

      • A personal statement (five double spaced type written page maximum)
      • A current academic resume
      • Three letters of recommendation from those who are knowledgeable of your current or potential leadership skills (use the admissions portal to request your letters)
      • Upload all unofficial copies of GRE scores (official copies should be requested from GRE reporting and sent to UW Admissions)
      • Agree to admissions terms and submit your application

Step 2: Submit official copies of transcripts and test scores to UW Admissions

  • Official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions should be requested and sent to UW Admissions
  • Official GRE scores should be sent directly from GRE reporting to UW Admissions
