Department of English

The MFA in Creative Writing program admits new students each fall. There are no spring admissions. The application deadline is February 1st. Final admission decisions are typically completed by April 15th.

Application Steps

Step 1

Start a formal application to the University of Wyoming online.  The Graduate School application is valid for one year. The University of Wyoming requires a $50 application fee.

Step 2

Transcripts from all previous college programs must be provided. Official transcripts should be sent directly from the schools you attended to the admissions office.

Note: The online application allows you to upload unofficial transcripts.  These can be used for application review and will save you time/money requesting official transcripts prior to the application deadline.  However, in the event that you are accepted to the program, the University of Wyoming will require all official transcripts be on file before you will be fully admitted.

Step 3

After paying the fee, submit the following materials to the online application.

  • Statement of Purpose of approximately 500 words explaining why you wish to undertake graduate study in creative writing. (Be sure to discuss the kind of creative work or project you intend to pursue within the program.)
  • Writing Sample representing your area of concentration. For prose, you may submit a maximum of 25 pages, numbered, typed, double-spaced. If you work in more than one area of primary concentration or a hybrid genre, please see our FAQs and contact us if you have further questions.
  • Curriculum Vitae

NOTE: Please upload all supplemental materials to the main UW online application portal.  You may email items to cw@uwyo.edu only if you encounter technical difficulties with UW's online system.

Step 4

Request three letters of recommendation through the online application portal. The recommender will receive an automated request to upload a letter for you.

If your reference is uncomfortable with automated request systems, or does not receive the request due to spam filters, have him or her email the letter directly to cw@uwyo.edu or mail it to the MFA office:

Step 5

TOEFL test scores must be provided (for applicants from non-English speaking countries).  A minimum score of 540 on the written exam, 207 on the computerized exam, or 76 on the Internet-based test (TOEFL iBT)  is required for full admission.  TOEFL scores are valid for two years.

OR Official IELTS scores sent to the Admissions Office.  A minimum score of 6.5 is required for full admission.

NOTE: If your TOEFL score does not reflect the minimum requirements, you have not taken the test, or you simply need supplemental English study before attending the University of Wyoming, you have the opportunity to attend our ELS Language Center to improve your English language skills and waive the TOEFL requirement.

Class sizes are limited and the admission process is competitive. All your application materials must be received by our office by February 1st for consideration. We cannot offer feedback on writing samples, and all deliberations of the admissions committee are confidential. Questions? Send us an email or check the Note to Applicants.

Note: GRE scores are not required by the program. You are welcome to include them if you have them.
