UW ECE professors are working on a variety of research programs in signal processing and computer networks.
In the field of image processing Drs. Wright and Barrett are using naturally occurring muons to image and detect “special nuclear material” for national defense and border security applications. Along with Dr. Anderson, they are also studying fly-eye vision for use in electro-optics design.
In power systems engineering, Drs. Pierre, Duan, and Muknahallipatna are applying advanced signal processing to develop crucial tools for monitoring stability of the nation’s power grid.
In computer networks, Dr. Kubichek is investigating new antenna array strategies and adaptive communication map technology. Muknahallipatna’s research in mobile ad hoc networks addresses topics in energy consumption, network lifetime, localization and routing. In addition, he and his grad students have developed a new high performance computing facility based on graphical processing units (GPUs) and they are developing parallel algorithms for application to computer vision, radio propagation maps and snow modeling.
And finally, professors Wright, Kubichek, and Pierre have been extensively involved
in signal processing pedagogy, publishing over 70 papers related to signal processing
education. Most notable is the text book, co-authored by Dr. Wright, entitled Real-Time Digital Signal Processing from MATLAB to C with the TMS320C6x DSPs, which is being used at universities around the world.
