All students admitted to UW's ESM department should be fully funded, either via a faculty advisor's grant or a departmental graduate teaching assistantship. You will be notified in your formal acceptance letter how you will be funded. In very rare cases, we may accept students with their own funding or that are self-funded. There are two ways to apply to our graduate programs.
Departmental teaching assistantships may be available to support graduate students in a given year. To seek a graduate teaching assistantship, you must do the following:
Contact a potential faculty advisor. Applicants will not be considered for admittance unless they have made arrangements with a faculty member who is willing to advise them. Inquire about the availability of a teaching assistantship.
Successful applicants will be notified with a formal acceptance letter from the department head.
Faculty who acquire grants with funding for a graduate student are able to recruit students on their own timeline.
Faculty regularly recruit graduate student applicants to work on grant-funded projects. To seek a grant-funded graduate assistantship, you must do the following:
Contact faculty that are recruiting grant-funded graduate students. Applicants will not be considered unless they have made arrangements with a faculty member that is willing to advise and financially support them.
Successful applicants will be notified with a formal acceptance letter from the department head.
The department admits graduate students year-round.
