How to Apply for ESM Graduate Programs

All students admitted to UW's ESM department should be fully funded, either via a faculty advisor's grant or a departmental graduate teaching assistantship. You will be notified in your formal acceptance letter how you will be funded. In very rare cases, we may accept students with their own funding or that are self-funded.

Ways to Apply

1. Apply for a Departmental Graduate Teaching Assistantship

Departmental teaching assistantships may be available to support graduate students in a given year. To seek a graduate teaching assistantship, you must do the following:

  • Identify a faculty advisor in the degree program you wish to apply for and inquire about the availability of a teaching assistantship. Applicants will not be considered for admittance unless they have made arrangements with a faculty member who is willing to advise them.

  • Apply for graduate admission.

  • Await formal acceptance. Successful applicants will be notified with a formal acceptance letter from the department head.

2. Apply for a Grant-Funded Graduate Assistantship

Faculty regularly recruit graduate student applicants to work on grant-funded projects. To seek a grant-funded graduate assistantship, you must do the following:

  • Identify a faculty advisor in the degree program you wish to apply for and inquire about the availability of a grant-funded position. Applicants will not be considered unless they have made arrangements with a faculty member willing to advise and financially support them.

  • Apply for graduate admission.

  • Await formal acceptance. Successful applicants will be notified with a formal acceptance letter from the department head.
