Tutor Program

one student tutoring another student

To receive free tutoring, students must actively participate in one of the following programs: GEAR UP, Student Success Services, or the McNair Scholars Program. If you participate in one of those programs, ask your advisor how to obtain tutoring.

Benefits of Tutoring

Tutoring can teach great study skills, help with time management, provide assistance with understanding college textbooks, and inform students of the academic resources available in college.

Tutoring is for everyone

There is a misconception that tutoring is only for when a student is failing a class. The point of tutoring is to help students pass a class before this happens or improve if the student feels he or she can do an even better job with proper assistance.

Maybe you can get it with a different method

This is something that many may feel, but why not at least give it a try. Maybe a tutor has access to some techniques for learning that help whereas past teaching was not coming through. There are many learning styles and tutoring is meant to find and assist the style right for the student.

It is about finding a tutor that is right for you

If such a situation happens, the program will work to either resolve the situation or find another tutor who has the knowledge and skills that help the student. Tutors are professionals and understand that sometimes personalities don’t mesh and it is important that the student gets the right fit for him/her.

More to the program than just tutoring

Besides tutoring, the program offers ipads and laptops to check out for a period of time. There are also smart pens available to check out for note-taking. In addition, there are useful handouts and laminated resources that have information about a variety of subjects and questions to help a student learn.
