Tom Meyer serves as the Project Director for GEAR UP Wyoming (GUWY). Prior to this role, he held a variety of positions in K-12 education, including Superintendent, High School Principal, Curriculum Director, School Counselor, History/PE Teacher, coach of multiple sports, and custodian. He is returning to UW where he earned his Master’s Degree in School Counseling from the University of Wyoming, while also holding a Bachelor’s Degree from Cornell College, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership with an emphasis on Personalized Learning from Drake University.

Tom’s upbringing on a farm in Iowa and his experience as a first-generation college student shaped his passion for supporting students and working in education. He views GEAR UP Wyoming as a vital program for the state, one that reflects a strong commitment to meeting the needs of every student. Through career exploration, postsecondary financial planning, and fostering a lifelong love of learning, Tom believes GUWY makes a significant impact across Wyoming. The program thrives through partnerships with community colleges, middle and high schools, parents, and communities statewide.

Tom firmly believes that all students possess the skills and potential necessary to succeed in postsecondary education. His favorite educational quote comes from Bill Daggett at the International Center for Leadership in Education: “The primary aim of education is not to enable students to do well in school, but to assist them to do well in their lives outside of school.”
