Former UW Ph.D. Student Mingliang Liu Receives J. Clarence Karcher Award

Mingliang Liu, a former Ph.D. student in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Wyoming under the supervision of Professor Dario Grana, has been named a recipient of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists' J. Clarence Karcher Award. The award recognizes young geophysicists under the age of 35 who have made significant contributions to the science and technology of exploration geophysics. Liu is honored for his innovative integration of rock physics, Bayesian inference, and physics-driven artificial intelligence into a unified framework for intelligent geophysics. Mingliang is now a professor at Shandong University and an Associate Editor of Geophysics. His research has advanced quantitative characterization and monitoring of subsurface CO₂ behavior, addressing critical challenges in carbon capture and storage. Since completing his Ph.D. at the University of Wyoming, Mingliang has established himself as a leader in intelligent subsurface imaging, translating fundamental scientific advances into practical applications with broad impact on the future of applied geophysics.
