Graduate students Ryan Herz-Thyhsen (Ph.D.), Quin Miller (Ph.D.), and Alexa Socianu (M.S.) all gave invited talks during the 2014–2015 academic year.
Ryan presented an invited talk at the American Association of Petroleum Geologists’s
(AAPG) Workshop, “The Bakken/Three Forks and Emerging Plays,” held in Golden, Colo.
titled, “Fluid-rock interactions in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming: an investigation
of reactions between hydraulic fracturing fluid and unconventional reservoirs.”
Quin presented a talk at the American Chemical Society (ACS) titled, “In-situ X-ray
diffraction and infrared spectroscopic investigation of magnesite precipitation in
interfacial water films.” Quin received the ACS Geochemistry Division Graduate Student Award, which funded his travel and allowed him to give an extended oral presentation at
the meeting.
Alexa presented an invited talk at the Houston Geological Society’s annual Applied
Geoscience Mudrocks Conference titled, “Importance of core and outcrop investigations
for evaluating TOC distribution in unconventional systems: an example from the Mowry
Shale.”
All three students are advised by Associate Professor John Kaszuba.
