December 5, 2017 — The University of Wyoming Department of Geology & Geophysics invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in Crustal Dynamics.

November 15, 2017 — Associate Professor Mike Cheadle was recently voted "best speaker for 2017" by the Wyoming Geological Association in Casper.

November 1, 2017 — Snoke’s award from the GSA goes to “an individual who throughout his/her career has made numerous distinguished contributions that have clearly advanced the science of structural geology or tectonics.” The award was inaugurated in 1988 and previous winners of this award read like a "Who's-Who" of of famous structural geologists.

September 1, 2017 — University of Wyoming Ph.D. student Ryan James Herz-Thyhsen is in some distinct company. Herz-Thyhsen is among 52 graduate students selected nationwide for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program.

August 30, 2017 — This years field camp took students to the Snowy Range and Happy Jack (WY), the Sierra Nevada and White -Inyo mountains (CA), the Ruby Mountains (NV), and Summer Coon volcano (CO).

August 15, 2017 — To Mark on his promotion to full Professor, to Ellen for promotion to Associate Professor on gaining tenure, to Janet on promotion to Associate Research Scientist and to Susan, already a senior research scientist, for another extended term!

August 1, 2017 — Randi Martinsen will be included in the AAPG’s 2nd edition of “The Heritage of the Petroleum Geologist” and will be honored at AAPG’s 100th Anniversary celebration in Houston in April.

July 15, 2017 — Scott Smithson (Emeritus Professor) is one of the two recipients of the 2017 SEG Outstanding Educator Award. Smithson’s scientific contributions helped lead the University of Wyoming Department of Geology and Geophysics to distinction in geophysical imaging of the earth’s continental crust.

July 3, 2017 — Dario, a UW School of Energy Resources assistant professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics, is a 2017 recipient of EAGE’s Arie van Weelden Award. It is presented to an EAGE member “who has made a highly significant contribution to one or more of the disciplines in the association.” Congratulations Dario!

June 1, 2017 — Graduate students Chris Doorn & Tanner Waggoner were recently awarded Geological Society of America student grants to support their research into the origin of oceanic crust

May 24, 2017 — Madeline Wewer, who has just joined us as a new graduate student, was one of four University of Wyoming students to receive National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowships this summer.

April 15, 2017 — James R. Steidtmann passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2017 surrounded by his family at his home in Arvada CO. Jim was born on October 14, 1938 in Bowling Green, Ohio.

March 28, 2017 — For decades, scientists have known that tropical places like Hawaii, with lush landscapes and vegetation, nutritionally benefit from the dust that blows from Asia. However, results of a new study -- headed by University of Wyoming researchers -- demonstrate that dust also can drive the evolution of nutrient budgets in mountainous forest ecosystems.

March 14, 2017 — Two University of Wyoming researchers led a voyage to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean and discovered five previously unknown active hydrothermal vents and a completely new vent site.

February 21, 2017 — Ellen Currano used to joke with filmmaker Lexi Jamieson Marsh that her life as a paleontologist would be so much easier if she could sprout facial hair in what is traditionally a male-dominated field that has long celebrated large, grizzled or bearded men going out into the field, facing the elements, carrying a large pickax and moving boulders.

February 21, 2017 — Nestled just beyond the Big Horn Mountains lies an ancient treasure trove -- one of the largest groups of Ice Age mammal bones found in North America. And the ancient fossils, located in a natural trap cave, will soon be under the curation of the University of Wyoming, which will serve as a federal repository for the fossils.
