HOMEACADEMIC PROGRAMSSTUDENT SERVICESPROFESSIONAL & APPLIED EXPERIENCESFIELD & GLOBAL
For centuries, explorers and outdoor leaders have ventured into the harsh and remote landscapes of the Earth, documenting not only their journeys but also the skills and knowledge required to navigate such environments. In this course, students will immerse themselves in the extreme conditions of Death Valley and the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, regions known for their unforgiving climates and stunning natural beauty. These landscapes offer a unique classroom for those seeking to hone their leadership, decision-making, and communication skills in outdoor settings.
Targeted primarily at Outdoor Leadership students, but open to all, this course provides a rigorous exploration of advanced leadership techniques and practices essential for managing groups in high-risk environments. Students will engage with online learning modules, attend pre-trip meetings on campus, and then apply their knowledge during a hands-on expedition over spring break. The experiential component will include kayaking and canoeing through the Black Canyon’s desert river environment, and backpacking in Death Valley National Park, as well as learning the considerations for camping in such remote and challenging settings.
By the end of the course, students will have gained invaluable experience in group leadership, navigation, risk management, and outdoor skill techniques, all while deepening their understanding of what it takes to lead in demanding desert environments. This course is not just an academic endeavor but a true test of leadership and adaptability in the face of nature’s extremes.
