EXPEDITION LEADERSHIP

HENRY MOUNTAINS, UTAH

For centuries, explorers and outdoor leaders have ventured into the harsh and remote landscapes of the Earth, documenting not only their journeys but also the skills and knowledge required to navigate such environments. In this course, students will immerse themselves in the rugged winter conditions of the Henry Mountains, Utah, a remote range known for its challenging peaks, unique geology, and isolated character. This demanding mountain landscape offers a unique classroom for those seeking to hone their leadership, decision-making, and communication skills in high-altitude, backcountry settings.

Targeted primarily at Outdoor Leadership students, but open to all, this course provides a rigorous exploration of advanced leadership techniques and practices essential for managing groups in high-risk mountain environments. Students will engage with online learning modules, attend pre-trip meetings on campus, and then apply their knowledge during a hands-on mountaineering expedition over spring break. The experiential component will focus on backpacking through rugged, snowy terrain, potential peak ascents (conditions permitting), navigation in complex mountain landscapes, and learning the specific considerations for camping and snow travel in remote, high-elevation settings.

By the end of the course, students will have gained invaluable experience in group leadership, mountain navigation, risk management, and mountaineering techniques, all while deepening their understanding of what it takes to lead in demanding alpine environments. This course is not just an academic endeavor but a true test of leadership and adaptability in the face of challenging mountain conditions.
