HISTORY OF HSI

Associated Department/Unit Name Goes Here

The High School Summer Institute started in 1984 with our founder, Kathleen Avery.  In 1984, Kathleen was asked by the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences to create a program to attract students to the University of Wyoming. Kathleen's vision for the program was to introduce early Wyoming high schoolers from across the state to university life. She wanted a program that went deeper than just academic college prep classes; she wanted students to enhance their personal development. To strengthen personal development, Kathleen structured the program so that students connected with other students of the same age, creating lasting relationships. In the summer of 1985, Kathleen's vision to engage students from around Wyoming came to life with the first HSI cohort coming to the university. For the past 40 years, a new cohort of students have come to the University of Wyoming and participated in HSI.
