Dr. Byra is currently a professor in the Division of Kinesiology and Health, College of Health Sciences, University of Wyoming. Dr. Byra teaches several undergraduate and graduate courses in the Physical Education Teacher Education program as well as conducts research specific to the Spectrum of teaching styles. He has been a faculty member at University of Wyoming since he completed his Ph.D. in 1989. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Wyoming, Dr. Byra taught physical education and French to junior high school aged students in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada (1979-1986). As a teacher, he coached volleyball and track and field at the junior and high school levels. Dr. Byra also coached volleyball at the regional and provincial level in British Columbia and Nova Scotia. Dr. Byra played on the University of Victoria Men’s Varsity Volleyball Team between 1975 and 1979, and was assistant coach for the Dalhousie University Men’s Varsity Volleyball Team 1981 to 1983.
Dr. Byra's primary line of research focuses on the examination of learner behavior as impacted by different styles/models of teaching in the physical education setting. Mosston and Ashworth's (2002) Spectrum of Teaching Styles serves as the framework for investigating learner behavior as it relates to motor, cognitive, and social/affective development.
