University of Wyoming College of law funding and finances, scholarships and employment information

The College of Law automatically considers all admitted students for scholarships based on their applications for admission. Scholarship awards are based on merit, diversity, and special circumstances. Each academic year, a substantial majority of law students receive some scholarship assistance.

Effective December 2012, the UW College of Law adopted a policy that all scholarships awarded to incoming students are offered on a three-year basis, meaning that scholarship recipients will retain the full amount of the initial scholarship award throughout their three-year course of study. The scholarship will not increase or decrease in amount so long as said student:

(i) enrolls in the College of Law on a full-time basis, and

(ii) maintains a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher at the end of each academic year.

To the extent that a scholarship recipient does not achieve a cumulative 2.0 grade point average by the end of the academic year, the merit scholarship award will be revoked.

If a scholarship recipient attends a study abroad program or visits another law school, the scholarship award will be placed on hold and reinstated when the student returns to the UW College of Law. For all students enrolled in joint degree programs or students seeking to take courses outside of the College of Law (e.g. languages courses, etc.), at another University, scholarships do not cover courses taken in other University academic units. If a student drops all courses before the add/drop deadline or completely withdraws from the University, their entire scholarship award is automatically rescinded in full.

In addition to incoming scholarships, the University of Wyoming may award additional monies during subsequent years in association with graduate assistantships, clinic directorships, and other special scholarship awards (e.g. Brimmer Scholarship, alumni scholarship, etc.). These monies will not affect the scholarships awarded at the time of admission. Also, the College of Law has received some scholarship funds that must be awarded in compliance with the wishes of the donor. Each year, the Scholarship Committee will receive a complete list of endowment funds and accompanying award criteria. The Committee will meet to assign these scholarships to fund incoming and/or continuing law student scholarship awards.

Law students are eligible for national scholarships, including:

Working During the Academic Year

The American Bar Association accreditation standards prohibit a law student from engaging in employment for more than 20 hours per week in any semester in which the student is enrolled in more than 12 credit hours. The first year of law school is very demanding. Students should make every effort to arrange for their finances so that they do not need to seek employment during their first year. Part-time work may be compatible with law study in the second and third years.
