Funding Your Law Degree

At the University of Wyoming College of Law, you'll receive a first-rate education at a reasonable price.  In fact, UW law students borrow an average of $67,000 to fund their law degree, while the national average for law school student loans is over $100,000.  We're in the business of providing the best education for the best value.

We do encourage all students to utilize MAX by AccessLex.  MAX is a free resource that provides one-on-one financial coaching from Accredited Financial Counselors, quick and easy to understand lessons, in-person and online learning options, and over $300,000 in scholarship incentives each year to keep you motivated!  From paying for law school to investing for your retirement - and every step in between - MAX can be your guide.

Scholarships

University of Wyoming College of Law students in class.

The College of Law considers all admitted students for conditional scholarships based on their applications for admission. Scholarship awards are based on merit and special circumstances. Each academic year, a substantial number of law students receive some scholarship assistance.

Conditional scholarships awarded to incoming students are offered on a three-year basis, meaning that scholarship recipients will retain the full amount of the initial scholarship award throughout their three-year course of study, contingent upon satisfying the following requirements:

  • To the extent that a scholarship recipient does not achieve a cumulative 2.5 grade point average by the end of the academic year, the merit scholarship award will be revoked.  Retention data for conditional scholarships can be found HERE, as well as in the College of Law’s Standard 509 Information Report posted on its website and in its conditional scholarship letters to admitted students receiving scholarships. To receive the scholarship offer, you must (i) pay the seat deposit specified in future correspondence by the requisite deadline (total of $500 paid in full, or in two installments of $250 each), (ii) enroll full time at the University of Wyoming College of Law, and (iii) submit a letter of appreciation/thank you letter, and (iv) after the seat deposit is paid, fill out the General Scholarship Form from Financial Aid.  Foregoing the scholarship offer will not have any effect on your admission to the College of Law.

If a scholarship recipient attends a study abroad program or visits at another law school, the scholarship award will be placed on hold and reinstated when the student returns to the UW College of Law. For all students enrolled in joint degree programs or students seeking to take courses outside of the College of Law (e.g. languages courses, etc.), scholarships do not cover courses taken in other University academic units. Also, if a student drops all courses before the add/drop deadline or completely withdraws from the University, their entire scholarship award is automatically rescinded in full.

In addition to incoming scholarships, the University of Wyoming may award additional monies during subsequent years in association with graduate assistantships, clinic directorships, and other special scholarship awards (e.g. Brimmer Scholarship, alumni scholarship, etc.). These monies will not affect the scholarships awarded at the time of admission. Also, the College of Law has received some scholarship funds that must be awarded in compliance with the wishes of the donor. Each year, the Scholarship Committee will receive a complete list of endowment funds and accompanying award criteria. The Committee will meet to assign these scholarships to fund incoming and/or continuing law student scholarship awards.

Please note: International students are not eligible for scholarships.

Questions?  The College of Law contact person for scholarships is Lisa Nunley, Director of Admissions and Student Services.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to her at lisa.nunley@uwyo.edu or 307-766-5419.

A free scholarship search platform that connects students to scholarships and financial aid tools.  No more digging to find scholarships you qualify for.  Students create a profile and get personalized scholarship recommendations.

Student Loans

There are two options for federal student loans available to law students:

We recommend students utilize all available funds from Direct Unsubsidized Loans before accepting any Grad PLUS Loans, due to the lower interest and fee rates associated with the Direct Unsubsidized Loans.

Repayment of federal loans consists of mutliple options.  Students should do a comparative analysis of features, including average projected monthly payments under each plan option, and the difference in interest and total payment for each plan.  Luckily, the free online AccessLex Student Loan Calculator can perform these analyses for you!

Remember to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year, as soon as it becomes available.

Questions?  The UW contact person for information about direct unsubsidized loans is Sara Muhsman.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to her at smuhsman@uwyo.edu or 307-766-2118.

Private student loans can be sought through lenders, but are not a highly favorable option for law students due to assorted lender terms, variable interest rates and length of repayment, lack of flexibility to pause payments, and the inability to qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.

Summer Federal Financial Aid

To receive summer federal financial aid students must:

  • Enroll in a minimum of 3 law credit hours
  • Have a current year FAFSA on file with UW
  • Complete the three question Summer Financial Aid Application (found on the registration screen within WyoWeb)

Working During the Academic Year

Law school is a demanding pursuit, requiring high levels of focus and full-time effort for three years.  Students are expected to devote substantially all working hours to the study of law.  We strongly recommend that first-year students do not engage in any outside employment during the law school academic year and that upper division students do not engage in outside employment over twenty hours a week during the academic year.

It is strongly encouraged that students seek employment off-campus for the two summers of law school.
