Course Overview: Advanced Water Law & Policy is a paper-based seminar that enables law and non-law graduate students to complete research projects on self-selected topics in the fields of domestic, international, and comparative water law and policy. The Colorado River version of this seminar focuses on the elaborate body of laws governing allocation and management of water in and around the Colorado River Basin—colloquially, the “Law of the River.” There is perhaps no more complex legal framework governing transboundary waters on the planet. We will explore the Law of the River’s historical evolution, existing composition, and cutting-edge policy issues facing it stemming from climate change and related modern challenges. Because of its research- and writing-intensive format, this seminar is an excellent option for satisfying the College of Law’s Advanced Writing Requirement.
