Family and Child Legal Advocacy Clinic

Student Clinic Director: Kayla Lyons

I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, but my aspiration was always to relocate to the West. I had a strong desire to help people in need, so I decided to study social work at Grand Valley State University.

I absolutely loved the work I did in the social work field. As a foster care specialist, I was able to advocate for the needs of children and connect families with valuable community resources. Often, I was a witness in these cases, which are reviewed every 90 days for each family. I worked closely with the attorneys assigned to the children and families, which ignited my interest in transitioning to the legal profession. 

I chose the University of Wyoming for law school because it offered the chance to work closely with faculty and because of the recognition the school has received for family law. Working within the Family and Child Legal Advocacy Clinic has enriched my love for helping others while providing practical, hands-on experience. Furthermore, the mentorship of faculty supervisor Dona Playton is something I am confident will shape my future.

During law school, I have served as treasurer for the Women’s Law Forum and have been actively involved in various clubs. Currently, I am on the board of the John Burman Student Government as the ABA representative and library liaison.

Upon graduation, my plan is to relocate to Colorado, where I aim to continue my career in family law.
