The University of Wyoming College of Law offers students opportunities to learn practical skills while working in the Family and Child Legal Advocacy Clinic (shown), Civil Legal Services Clinic, Defender Aid Clinic, Energy, Environmental and Natural Resources Law Clinic, the International Human Rights Clinic, Prosecution Assistance Program, Business Planning Practicum, Estate Planning Practicum, Legislation Practicum and Local Government Practicum.

The spring issue of preLaw magazine was published today, recognizing the University of Wyoming College of Law as a Best School for Practical Training and a Top Environmental Law School. These are in addition to Best Value Law School and Top School for Family Law honors already received.

For practical education, the editors looked at clinics, simulation courses and externships, whether clinic participation is guaranteed and rate of student involvement, as well as pro bono hours and moot court participation. The University of Wyoming ranked in the top 40 for training practice-ready lawyers.

The editors wrote, “Practical training can be exciting and sometimes emotionally draining for students. They get an idea of what it's like to balance the demands of their clients, the hours of preparation time and the emotional pressure.”

Third-year law student Caitlyn Tucker says, “The Family and Child Legal Advocacy Clinic and Professor Dona Playton help students understand how dynamics of families, child advocacy, and domestic violence intersect with the law. I recommend the clinic to anyone who wants to gain the advocacy skills to be successful in the practice of law.”

In its Leaders in Environmental Law section, preLaw magazine noted that UW students in the Energy, Environmental and Natural Resources Law Clinic “work directly with attorneys from the Water and Natural Resources Division of the Wyoming Attorney General's Office on cases involving the State of Wyomingstate agencies or state officials. They have drafted motions and represented the state in proceedings before the Wyoming Oil & Gas Conservation Commission and Industrial Siting Council.”

The magazine advises law school applicants, “If you're interested in this field of law, look for a school with a wide variety of well-developed courses and a certificate program that will strengthen your resume while broadening your horizons.”
