Ever wondered how a book makes it from your request to being available on the shelves
at UW Libraries? Here's a step-by-step behind-the-scenes look at the process!
Submit Your Request
It all starts when you find a book you'd like the library to purchase. Head over to
the library website, select “More” on our drop down menu and you’ll find the option to “Request a Purchase.”
It’s quick and easy to submit your request!
Checking Availability & Cost
Once your request is in, we will take a closer look at the book's cost and whether
it fits the needs of UW Libraries’ collection. We want to ensure it will be useful
to our students, faculty, and staff.
The Backup Plan
If we can’t purchase the book, don’t worry! You can often borrow it from another library
through Interlibrary Loan or Prospector. You’ll be able to get your hands on that book one way or another!

It’s Time to Order!
If we can purchase the book, we will move forward with the order. From here, it’s
just a matter of waiting for the book to arrive and making sure everything’s in place.
Inspecting the Book
When the book arrives, we ensure it’s in perfect condition and not damaged in any
way. We move on to the next steps if it's the right book and in good shape.
Cataloging the Book
Now, we officially add the book to our collection. We create a record in the library’s
catalog with the book’s title, author, subject, and description. This helps us organize
and makes it easier for you to find.

Stamps and Security Features
Next, we mark the book as the property of UW Libraries with a stamp, apply the tattle
tape (a security feature), and print the call number on the spine so you can easily
spot it on the shelf.
Ready for the Shelves!
And just like that, your requested book is ready to be shelved and available to all
library users. It’s now part of UW Libraries’ collection and ready to check out!

So, the next time you make a request, you’ll know exactly what happens behind the
scenes to bring that book to your hands!
