UW Libraries is improving your library experience by implementing Radio Frequency
Identification (RFID) tags across our physical collections. This upgrade will make
self-checkout faster, streamline returns, and improve overall library efficiency—all
while maintaining your privacy.
What You Need to Know
-
What are RFID tags? These tags contain a small coil and microchip that store only book metadata—specifically the barcode number and the book owner (UW Libraries)—and do not track patron information.
-
Why the change? RFID technology allows for multiple-item self-checkout, making the process quicker
and more convenient. It also helps library staff to more effectively inventory and
maintain order in the collection so you can easily find what you need.
-
How does this affect access? The tagging process will start in mid March and continue through August 2025. Some
library sections will be temporarily closed during tagging but materials will still
be available—just ask at the Help Desk or use for assistance or take advantage of
our Hold for Me service.
RFID Tagging Progress
We’ll keep this space updated with the latest information on where RFID tagging is
taking place and any temporary closures. Check back regularly for updates!
