Statistics Minor

Statistics Undergraduate Minor

A Minor in Statistics is a Major Addition to Any Degree Program

Many students and maybe you as well, are asking, "Can I get a job with a bachelor's degree in .?" In today's marketplace, no one can answer this question with a definite yes. However, students with solid training in statistics are sought after by many employers at all levels, including the bachelor's level. In fact, many employers would consider an individual with a minor in statistics to be qualified as a statistician in their field. With starting salaries for bachelor's level statisticians (including those students with a minor in statistics) of at least $35,000, you should discuss the possibility of a minor in statistics with one of our faculty members or graduate students.

A minor in statistics emphasizes the concepts of statistical application rather than the mathematics behind the material. These concepts focus on how to ask appropriate questions, how to collect relevant information, and how to use this information to provide good answers to our questions. This process of study design, data collection, and data analysis can be applied in virtually all fields, including the sciences, arts, humanities, and education.

For those students in their chosen field who would like to pursue an advanced degree, at either the Master's or Doctoral level, a minor in statistics is considered by most graduate schools as a major addition to any students resume. Since most graduate degree programs are involved in research and require statistical training beyond an initial course, students who have completed a minor have a decided competitive advantage over those students without similar experience.

The University of Wyoming's undergraduate statistics program presents its students with a broad range of experience found only at the largest universities, but offered within the intimacy of a small institution. At UW, you will have the opportunity to learn statistical methods and software within the context of real world applications, and how statistics is an essential part of the research process.

Graduate Minor in Statistics for Candidates for the Masters or PhD Degree

Graduate students in many disciplines find their graduate and subsequent careers richer for a solid foundation in statistical design and analysis skills. A clearly defined concentration should enhance employment opportunities for students who have an interest in a research career, be it academic or government/business oriented. The concentration will be visible to prospective employers by designation of the minor on a students' transcript. This minor is available to all students in masters or Ph.D. degree programs.

Requirements: The minor will require a concentration of 12 credit hours, to be distributed among approved 5000-level courses from a department (certain courses from departments other than statistics will be considered for approval; a maximum of 3 hours can come from other departments). Courses from other departments can "double-count" for the Statistics Minor and other requirements.

Declaration of the minor: The Change of Major form on the university registrar's page can be used to declare the minor.  The form is omnibus form; one option on it is to declare a minor. Upon completion the Department Head, Department of Statistics, will indicate on the Program of study form that the array of courses presented satisfies the requirements for a statistics minor. Completion of the statistics minor will be so noted on the transcript of students who declare the minor and successfully complete their graduate degree program.

Current Courses and Existing Programs: All 5000 level courses currently offered by the Statistics Department will be on the menu for the graduate statistics minor. The exception to this list is STAT 5000, which will not be allowed to count towards the Minor.
