Proctoring Options

The University of Wyoming utilizes the ALEKS Placement, Preparation, and Learning (PPL) assessment to determine a student's math placement and requires the exam to be proctored. 

There are two options for proctoring:

• Online proctoring

  • Students can download Honorlock, the online proctoring extension integrated into ALEKS, for a cost of $10 (plus tax) per attempt. Honorlock Proctoring is available 24/7.

• On-campus proctoring

  • Students can come to one of the on-campus proctored sessions at no additional cost (other than the ALEKS PPL test pack cost). On-campus proctoring is only available at certain times and locations.

Online Proctoring via Honorlock

Honorlock is a remote proctoring service that creates a fair testing environment for all students by monitoring each student's exam session and alerting a live proctor if any issues are detected. 

Students can take the exam anywhere they have an appropriate testing space, hardware, and good internet connection, and at any time (24/7) with no scheduling required. 

Honorlock proctoring costs $10 (plus tax) for each attempt, via debit/credit card. Payment will be requested when you log in to take the exam. 

You must use Honorlock proctoring if you are taking the MPE outside of an on-campus proctoring session.

 

How to set up Honorlock

1. Using a Google Chrome browser, download and install the Honorlock Chrome Extension.

2. With the extension installed, navigate to your ALEKS placement assessment and follow the proctoring instructions that appear on-screen.

 

Troubleshooting with Honorlock

• Are you using Google Chrome with the Honorlock extension installed? You should see a little shield with a checkmark in the upper right corner of your browser after the extension is enabled. Note that Honorlock does not work on any other browser. 

• If Honorlock has launched and told you that you are ok to take the exam and you see a submit password screen, just hit submit even though the field is empty. Honorlock is supposed to automatically submit the password for you but there is a glitch for some students where they must manually hit “submit”.

Honorlock & ALEKS Guidelines

To be counted as a proctored session you MUST follow all applicable Honorlock guidelines. Honorlock will not tell you that you are violating a guideline while you are taking the exam. If you are found to have violated any of the guidelines during review of your exam, your score will not be loaded (and you may need to retake the exam in person).

 

Online Testing Considerations

• ALEKS PPL is a web-based application accessible from any computer that meets the system requirements, 24/7.  To see if your computer meets the requirements complete the system check. It is your responsibility to be in a location that has dependable internet access throughout the exam.

• You will have 2 hours to complete the exam. It takes on average between 60-90 minutes to complete; so take your time. 

• You may retake the MPE as many times as needed if you are not satisfied with your score. However, you will need to satisfy the preparation requirement in the guided learning modules prior to all subsequent online attempts.

• Your score will be loaded within three business days (if none of the guidelines were violated).

On-campus Proctoring

There is no registration necessary for students to take the on-campus MPE, just show up at the assessment location at the date and time listed in the table below. The University of Wyoming offers a number of established, on-campus proctoring sessions Fall and Spring semesters. 

While the proctoring is free, please note that you will still have to purchase the ALEKS PPL test pack ($15 plus tax). See the Math Placement page for details.   

 

What to bring & what not to bring:

• A valid ID (government issued photo ID or student photo ID)

• Credit/debit card to purchase the ALEKS PPL test pack (if you haven't already done so)

• Pencils and scratch paper will be provided.

• Calculators are not allowed.

 

What to expect:

• On-campus proctoring sessions will occur in 3-hour time blocks, however students only have two hours to take the MPE.

  • The time block will not be extended if a student shows up when there is less than 2 hours left.

• The proctor may cancel the session if no one arrives within the first hour. 

• You may retake the MPE in person even if you haven't satisfied the preparation requirement in the guided learning modules. The proctor will insert a password that will allow you to bypass the additional practice time (this is only applies if you are retaking the MPE in person). 

• Your score will either be loaded the same day as the exam or the following business day. 

 

Upcoming on-campus proctoring dates

If you plan to arrive after the first hour has passed, please email math-registration@uwyo.edu, so we can alert the proctor that there will be a late arrival. The time block will not be extended, so you will be forfeiting your time to take the exam if you come more than an hour after the session start time.
