The Department’s current plans are to host 2021-2022 performances in person. Select concerts or recitals may also be live-streamed. Each scheduled livestreamed concert will be assigned its own link, which you may access from your computer or other device. Recorded videos will be accessible from this page as they become available.

Our performers are working hard to perform for you and are happy they can do so! Playing an instrument or singing requires a great deal of breath support. Even though we are masked, we are breathing deeply and exhaling with great energy. Respectfully, we request that all members of the audience please consider masking – for your safety, the safety of other audience members, and that of the performers. Thank you so much.

Department of Music Reception Policy (Fall 2021):

In the interest of health and safety for the Buchanan Center’s shared musical community, the Department of Music will not hold intermission or post-performance receptions during fall semester 2021; this includes receptions for student recitals. Post-performance receptions may be held out-of-doors or at an off-site location. Receptions planned outside on the Buchanan Center property will be the responsibility of the performer or their family and friends to set up, break down, and clean up the reception site.

	Tom Hooten, Guest Trumpet Recital with Rebecca Wilt, piano February 25, 2022, 7:30 p.m. In person from the BCPA Recital Hall The University of Wyoming Department of Music is honored to present guest artist Tom Hooten, Principal Trumpet of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and one of the world’s prominent classical trumpeters today. Hooten will be joined by virtuoso collaborative pianist Rebecca Wilt. Hooten began his career in 2000 with “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, where he was often a featured soloist. He went on to join the Indianapolis Symphony as Assistant Principal Trumpet in 2004, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as Principal Trumpet in 2006, and the LA Philharmonic in 2012. He released “Trumpet Call,” his first solo album, in 2011. Hooten is an active soloist and has appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, “The President’s Own” US Marine Band, United States Air Force Band, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Richmond Symphony Orchestra, Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra. As an orchestral and chamber musician, he has performed with ensembles such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Grand Teton Music Festival, Harrisburg Symphony, and the Baltimore Symphony. Hooten can be heard on numerous recordings with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the National Brass Ensemble. back to the top

	Helios Trio With Chi-Chen Wu, piano, John Fadial, violin, Beth Vanderborgh, cello February 27, 2022, 3:00 p.m. In person from the BCPA Concert Hall Free Get the Program Helios Trio, Chi-Chen Wu, piano, John Fadial, violin, Beth Vanderborgh, cello, will give a send-off recital in anticipation of their Weill Recital Hall debut in Carnegie Hall. The recital is free and the public is cordially invited. The recital will feature “The Spirit and the Maiden,” by Australian pianist-composer Elena Kats-Chernin; “ Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49 in D minor” by Felix Mendelssohn; and “Piano Trio” by Maurice Ravel. Helios Trio is a dynamic ensemble comprised of artist faculty from the University of Wyoming. 	Faculty Recital Series: Americanisms, Reflections of Our Musical Heritage Featuring Dr. Theresa Bogard, piano March 6, 2022, 3:00 p.m. In person at the BCPA Concert Hall Free Get the Program This faculty recital by University of Wyoming Music faculty member Dr. Theresa Bogard, piano, presents works that highlight the musical influences of American idioms, including spirituals, jazz, folk music, fiddle music, and ragtime. 	UW Jazz Festival Presents "One For All" March 7, 2022, 7:30 p.m. In person at the BCPA Concert Hall UW Jazz Festival is pleased to present its headliner concert featuring the cooperative jazz sextet “One For All,” as well as the Wyoming All-State Jazz Band with Peter Sommer, tenor saxophone. The UW Jazz Festival combines great music with outstanding and positive jazz education to encourage the next generation of jazz musicians. The festival offers middle and high school jazz ensembles non-competitive performance opportunities, an outstanding line up of guest artists and clinicians, and concerts. One For All was formed in 1996 in NYC at the legendary jazz club Augie’s (now Smoke). Collectively, the band has forged a powerful, yet sleek sound which has become synonymous with hard-swinging, straight-ahead modern jazz. Individually, each member of One For All has earned a sterling reputation not only as a soloist/bandleader (via solo recordings and tours), but as a top-shelf, first-call player on the NYC scene. back to the top

	Andrew Harley Collaborative Piano Residency March 7 - 10, 2022 English pianist Andrew Harley, Director of Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music Degree Programs, Eastman School of Music, will be in residency at the University of Wyoming in march 2022. Harley enjoys an internationally recognized performing and teaching career. Specializing in instrumental chamber music and song literature, he has been heard in live broadcasts on national radio and television, as well as on numerous recordings. 	Wyoming Trumpet Workshop March 26, 2022, 10:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. BCPA Concert Hall Featuring David Wharton, Howard Shear, David Ware, and Derek McDonald The University of Wyoming Department of Music and the Wyoming Trumpet Guild present a day of trumpet masterclasses, clinics, and performances. A final concert will be held at 3;30 p.m. in the BCPA Concert Hall. Hosted by UW Music faculty member Dr. David Wharton, the Wyoming Trumpet workshop will feature nationally renowned guest artists Howard Shear, David Ware, and Derek McDonald. 	Afternoon of A Faun / Petrushka Presented by the UW Symphony Orchestra and the Department of Theatre and Dance Choregraphed by Juliana Freude and Cat Kamrath Conducted by Dr. Michael Griffith March 29 - April 2, 2022, 7:30 p.m., April 3, 2:00 p.m. Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts Main Stage UW Symphony Orchestra joins UW Theatre & Dance in producing two fully-staged ballets from the repertoire of Sergei Diaghilev’s groundbreaking Ballets Russes, “Afternoon of a Faun,” composed by Claude Debussy, and “Petrushka,” composed by Igor Stravinsky. Based in Paris from 1909-1929, the Ballet Russes is widely regarded as the most influential ballet company of the 20th century. back to the top

	Double Reed Day Final Concert April 2, 2022, 3:00 p.m. BCPA Recital Hall UW Music hosts Double Reed Day, a unique opportunity to discover more about double reed instruments, Saturday, April 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts Recital Hall. All activities are free and the public is cordially invited. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and master classes at 10:00 a.m. A final, public concert at 3:00 p.m. will be led by UW Music faculty Jennifer Stucki, oboe, and Karoi Uno-Jack, bassoon, as well as guest artists from the Colorado Symphony Nicholas Timmeran, oboe, and Tristan Rennie, bassoon. The concert will feature chamber music and solos, and participants from Double Reed Day playing in the Double Reed Band for the grand finale. back to the top

	Triveni: An Evening of Classical Indian Instrumental Music April 2, 7:30 p.m. Arts and Science Auditorium Leading Indian classical exponents of their respective instruments Zakir Hussain, Kala Ramnath, and Jayanthi Kumaresh come together as a trio, TRIVENI. Triveni is the mythical site of the union of three sacred rivers in India, and the name aptly represents the confluence of the varied musicalities which the three maestros bring to this collaboration. A hallmark of Zakir Hussain’s iconic career has been his ground-breaking work at the forefront of musical dialogues between Hindustani (North Indian) and Carnatic (South Indian) music. With Kala Ramnath, an innovative representative of North Indian raga tradition, Jayanthi Kumaresh, the leading exponent of the ancient South Indian veena, and Zakir Hussain seamlessly stitching North and South Indian rhythm traditions to provide a bridge for veena and violin to meet, TRIVENI promises to be a fluent, joyous and entirely original musical conversation. 	Art Lande Trio: FLEX April 7 MASTERCLASS 1:00pm, Buchanan Center Room 1050 CONCERT 7:30pm BCPA Recital Hall Grammy-nominated Art Lande is an internationally known pianist, composer, improviser, drummer and educator who has performed with a long list of the Who’s Who in jazz. Lande is well known for his innovative approaches to teaching piano, improvisation, and ear training. He has many local students and often travels internationally for workshops, camps and performances. Joining Lande is Dru Heller on drums and Gonzalo Teppa on bass. Heller has recorded, performed and toured with artists such as Byron Stripling, John Ellis, Ron Miles, Art Lande, Wycliffe Gordon, John Ellis, Kate McGarry, Dave Pietro, and many others. He leads his own group and maintains a busy schedule as a freelance musician in the Denver jazz scene and is an affiliate faculty member of Metropolitan State University in Denver. Two-time Latin Grammy Nominee Teppa serves on the UW Music faculty and was named “Best Jazz Soloist” by Downbeat Magazine (2004-2006) and the Greeley Jazz Festival (2004, 2005). He has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Matt Wilson, Ed Simon, Chris Potter, Tom Harrell, Ron Miles, Art Lande, Slide Hampton, Don Byron, Jeremy Pelt, Ben Goldberg, and others. back to the top

	Concertmaster Fund Recital April 14, 7:00 p.m. In person from the BCPA Recital Hall The UW Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Association are thrilled to present their annual CONCERTMASTER FUND RECITAL. This special fundraising event will be Thursday, February 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the Buchanan Center Recital Hall. This is a fundraising event for the Charles Moore, MD Concertmaster Fellowship. The Moore Endowment supports the UWSO Concertmaster position. It is a critical funding need for the orchestra, and we sincerely hope you will attend. The UWSO’s co-concertmasters, Saúl Fuego Garcia and Brittany Kubiak, are assisted by Dr. Nathália Kato, piano. The fascinating program includes music by J. S. 	Percussion Festival Featured Concert April 16, 2022, 5:30 p.m. In person from the BCPA Concert Hall Nationally recognized percussionists and educators Dr. Andrew Spencer, Dr. Greg Harris, and Carl Dixon, will join Dr. Andy Wheelock for a very special evening of percussion music from around the world. 	Adzel Duo April 18, 2022, 7:30 p.m. In person from the BCPA Concert Hall Join UW Music for special guests, the Adzel Duo, clarinetists Mariam Adam and Stephanie Zelnick. Adam is an internationally-known chamber musician, soloist, music advocate, and educator originally from Monterey, California. She is the Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University. Zelnick is Professor of Clarinet at the University of Kansas and Principal Clarinet of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra. AdZel Duo has performed and taught at Carnegie Hall, Eastman School of Music, Juilliard School, University of Michigan, Northwestern University, The Costa Rica International Clarinet Festival, The International Clarinet Association ClarinetFest, University of Delaware, The European Clarinet Conference, Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium, Zodiac Festival, Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival, San Francisco Conservatory, University of California at Irvine, University of Kansas, Rutgers School of Music and the Yale School of Music, among others. 	Violin Treasures with Special Guest Augustin Hadelich April 22, 2022, 7:30 p.m. In person from the BCPA Concert Hall UW Music is proud to present a concert featuring renowned violnist Augustin Hadelich. Hadelich will perform a mixed program of works for violin and piano by Beethoven and Ravel in collaboration with UW faculty pianist Dr. Chi-Chen Wu, as well as a performance of the G major concerto by African-French composer Joseph de Bologne, accompanied by the UW Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Beth Vanderborgh. Augustin Hadelich is one of the great violinists of our time. From Bach to Brahms, from Bartók to Adès, he has mastered a wide-ranging and adventurous repertoire. He is often referred to by colleagues as a musician's musician. Named Musical America’s 2018 "Instrumentalist of the Year," he is consistently cited worldwide for his phenomenal technique, soulful approach, and insightful interpretations. back to the top

	Grieg: Violin Sonatas for Flute April 24, 2022, 7:30 p.m. In person from the BCPA Recital Hall Featuring Kaleb Chesnic, flute, and Nathalia Kato, piano Kaleb Chesnic and Nathália Kato met while pursuing their degrees in music at the University of Colorado Boulder. A few occasional musical partnerships through the years led them into a greater project that resulted in their recording debut. The CD, released in November of 2021, features Chesnic's own transcriptions for flute and piano of the three violin sonatas of Edvard Grieg (scan QR code for more information). This recital at the University of Wyoming is a celebratory event for Chesnic and Kato's album. back to the top

	Sound, Not Silence: Piano Duets by Women Composers from the Americas April 25, 2022, 7:30 p.m. In person from the BCPA Recital Hall Free This lecture-recital features guest pianists Jéssica Pacheco-Hjelmstad and Alejandro Cremaschi performing a program fully dedicated to piano duets (one piano, four-hand) composed by women from the Americas. Pacheco-Hjelmstad and Cremaschi’s collaborative work in the last five years has focused on bringing forth diverse musical voices from the Americas, including conference presentations on piano duets by South American composers. The recital aims to introduce listeners to unfamiliar pieces by this underrepresented group of composers, to encourage teachers to include this music in their teaching, and to inspire other pianists to perform this repertoire. The lecture portion will introduce information about the composers and their styles and techniques, tonal writing and contemporary idioms, as well as pedagogical reflections of the works performed and information about how to obtain the pieces. 	Cory Smythe Residency: Public Recital April 29, 2022, 7:00 p.m. In person from the BCPA Concert Hall Featuring guest pianist Cory Smythe, with Sherry Sinift, violin, and james Przygocki, viola This free recital features the music of composers Amy Beach, Charles, Ives, Anthony Braxton, Anne Guzzo, and Ernst Bloch. Grammy Award-winning pianist Cory Smythe has worked closely with pioneering artists in new, improvisatory, and classical music, including saxophonist-composer Ingrid Laubrock, violinist Hilary Hahn, and multidisciplinary composers from Anthony Braxton to Zosha Di Castri. In addition to the public recital, Smythe will teach a jazz studio class, a masterclass for strings and piano, and a composition masterclass; take part in convocation with Music students; and hold an improv session. 	UW Symphony: An American in Paris May 5, 7:30 p.m. In person from the BCPA Concert Hall Livstream recording of several pieces available on UW Music's YouTube channel. This year’s UWSO theme has been “Joy and Reflection.” When conductor Michael Griffith wrote that last summer, he thought the pandemic was almost over, so audiences were joyful. But we were also struggling with what we’d been through, thus, “Reflection.” At least in Laramie, we’re in a lull between surges. So the orchestra hopes to see a great turnout for their varied and fascinating closing concert, An American in Paris. The big closing piece is a huge favorite in the orchestral sphere, George Gershwin’s An American in Paris. What joyful music! By turns jazzy, bluesy, and bright, it even includes Parisian taxi horns! You’ll hear the bustle of Parisian life, the loneliness of our expat hero or heroine, and their exciting life in this wonderful city. You might know it from the wonderful MGM film of the same name, where Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron dance one of Hollywood’s great ballets. But be aware: the music came first, the film followed. The guest soloist is the wonderful young pianist Andrew Staupe. He’s chosen the 1934 Concerto in One Movement by the African-American composer Florence Price. Ms. Price’s music has only recently become generally known, and the UWSO is thrilled to bring it to Laramie. The music is engaging and attractive, with a wonderful closing section based on a juba, a folk dance popular in the years before the Civil War. It sounds a bit like a Scott Joplin rag, highly syncopated (e.i., with strong notes between the beats, extending into the next beat). Other sections are more dramatic or lyrical, a bit more like late-Romantic music. The UW Symphony also excited to be one of four orchestra premiering Jesse Ayers’ Shinkansen. Dr. Griffith has family in Japan, and has to ride their incredible bullet trains to see his grandchildren – and Shinkansen is what they call these 186 m.p.h. wonders. As you’d expect, the music is fast! Last year Dr. G was reading a biography of George Szell, who conducted The Cleveland Orchestra for decades. In it, he ran across a piece he’d never heard of: William Grant Still’s 1943 In Memoriam: The Colored Soldiers Who Died for Democracy. Still was the leading Black composer of his generation, best known for his Afro-American Symphony. George Szell believed in the piece so much, when the Cleveland Orchestra toured the Soviet Union in 1965, he made it an important part of their repertoire. He also performed it when he was a guest conductor of the Boston Symphony. Of course this piqued Dr. Griffith’s curiosity. He became familiar with it, and decided to include it on this concert. Mr. Still wrote it for the New York Philharmonic during WW II, one of a series of commissions commemorating those who lost their lives in that terrible war. Of course, as Still’s title so eloquently shows, he chose to make a more specific statement with this short piece. Musically it moves back and forth between distant military fanfares and an African-American Spiritual. The initial plan was to present a program all by American composers. However, the UWSO is adding one additional short piece: Valentin Silvestrov’s Prayer for Ukraine. Silvestrov is today’s leading Ukrainian composer, and he wrote it as for choir in 2014. Only weeks ago the Bamberg Symphony in Germany commissioned an orchestral version, which they posted onto YouTube. Dr. Griffith came across it, and was tremendously moved. The UW Symphony is one of only a few orchestras in the world performing Prayer for Ukraine, which will start the concert. Get the Program back to the top

	Andrew Staupe, Piano May 6, 7:30 p.m. In person from the BCPA Concert Hall Guest pianist Andrew Staupe, who will also perform with the UW Symphony Orchestra on May 5, will perform an eclectic program of piano music, including works by composers John Bull, Germaine Tailleferre, Clara Schumann, Frédéric Chopin, Ottorino Respighi, and Franz Schubert. Staupe is emerging as one of the distinctive voices in a new generation of pianists. As soloist, he has performed with many major orchestras across the United States and toured extensively in Europe, including with the Baltimore Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Houston Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, the George Enescu Philharmonic in Romania, the Orquestra Filarmónica de Bogotá in Colombia, and many others. He has performed in Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Steinway Hall in New York, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Rachmaninov Hall in Moscow, the Schumann Haus in Leipzig, and the Salle Cortot in Paris. He has also been a featured guest on American Public Media’s “Performance Today” and Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.” An avid chamber musician, Staupe has jammed with Bobby McFerrin, played Tangos with the Assad Brothers, toured with Chee-Yun, and collaborated with some of the most distinguished artists today. He is also deeply passionate about performing contemporary music and has premiered a large number of new works. back to the top

	Brahms Requiem May 7, 2022, 7:30 p.m. In person from the BCPA Concert Hall Dr. Holly Dalrymple and Dr. Brian C. Murray, conductors All UW Choirs present a masterwork of the choral canon, Ein deutsches Requiem, op. 45 by Johannes Brahms, with two pianos featuring Nathália Kato and Emily Alley. “Ein Deutsches Requiem” is one of Brahms’ most well-known and beloved works, a work of consolation and hope offered in the German vernacular language; a requiem for all people. It follows a set liturgy and is a Catholic musical response and petition for the soul of the deceased. Brahms chose to deviate from the texts of a traditional requiem and instead crafted scriptures from the Luther Bible that would be a solace for those left behind.
