No stranger to Wyoming, Irish pianist Barry Douglas will perform a Cultural Programs'
concert Friday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the University of Wyoming Fine Arts Center
concert Hall.
It will mark the eighth time he has performed at UW since 1989. Tickets cost $23 for
the public and $19 for students and senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased online
at www.uwyo.edu/finearts or call (307) 766-6666. Tickets also are available at the
Wyoming Union information desk and Fine Arts box office.
Douglas launched his career by winning the gold medal at the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition
in Moscow (the only other westerner ever to win the gold was Van Cliburn). He is now
a superstar, with an international career, both as a pianist (with more than 25 CDs
to his credit), and as a conductor of the orchestra he founded, Camerata Ireland.
For his services to the United Kingdom, he received an OBE (Order of the British Empire)
from Queen Elizabeth in 2002, and in 2009, Douglas became the first performer ever
to receive an honorary degree from the University of Wyoming. To quote the citation,
"although he commands venues with princes and kings, he has provided accessible concert
opportunities across the state and the Rocky Mountain region. Performing in high school
auditoriums and small community theaters rather than great concert halls, Douglas
has brought life to the most enduring treasures of our classical tradition for audiences
who rarely have such an opportunity."
