Bénédicte Sohier, a University of Wyoming Department of Modern and Classical Languages assistant lecturer, will host a series of six French films this semester. All films are free and open to the public.
Films will be shown Thursdays starting at 2:45 p.m. in Room 202 of the Corbett Building. Free pizza and beverages will be available at all film showings.
“Films are in French with English subtitles, so no knowledge of French is required to enjoy them,” Sohier says.
The first film in the series is Thursday, Sept. 3, with the showing of “Inch’ Allah Dimanche” (2001). The film focuses on an immigrant’s struggles against old world traditions. Zouina (Fjeria Deliba) leaves her homeland with her three children to join her husband in France. She struggles against her mother-in-law’s tyranny and her husband’s distrust as she adjusts to life in exile.
French-Algerian director Yamina Benguigi brings out the passion in this story, Sohier says.
Other films are “Le Diner de cons” (1998) Sept. 17; “Welcome” (2009) Oct. 8; “8 femmes” (2002) Oct. 22; “Au revoir les enfants” (1987) Nov. 5; and “Moliére” (2007) Nov. 19.
A PDF with a description of the films is available at www.uwyo.edu/newssupport/newsHighRes/documents/2015/09/french-film-series.pdf, or on the Department of Modern and Classical Languages website at www.uwyo.edu/modlang/.
