UW Invited to Perform at National Dance Festival

University of Wyoming dancers are invited to perform at the National Festival of the American College Dance Association June 8-11 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. 

“This is a high honor; we have only had two works invited to the national festival -- ‘The Pink Blue’ in 2008 and ‘Of a Mind’ in 2006,” says Kathy Kirkaldie, UW Fine Arts coordinator.

The 1966 José Limón work, “Excerpts from The Winged,” was reconstructed by guest artist Francisco Ruvalcaba of the Limón Dance Company, with rehearsals directed by UW dance faculty member Jennifer Deckert. 

“This is an amazing opportunity to represent the University of Wyoming on a national stage and give the dancers hard-earned recognition of their stunning performance and dedication,” Deckert says.

UW dancers presented their work at the recent Northwest Conference of the American College Dance Association. World-renowned adjudicators David Dorfman, Virginia Johnson and Tiffany Mills described it as “a brilliantly realized reconstruction of an exquisite classic modern dance performed with precision and creature-like embodiment.”

The conference hosted 425 dancers and faculty from 31 schools, and presented 44 different pieces of choreography for adjudication.
