Researchers will discuss their work -- documenting “Manitos” (New Mexicans) who migrated to different parts of the United States the last century -- during a free public presentation Friday, Sept. 22, at the University of Wyoming’s American Heritage Center (AHC).
“Following the Manito Trail: A Conversation with the Researchers” (“Siguiendo el camino de los Manitos: una conversación con los investigadores”) will be from 5-6 p.m. in the AHC’s Stock Growers Room.
Discussing the project are former UW Assistant Professor of Latina/o studies and English Vanessa Fonseca, from Arizona State University; Adam Herrera, UW Foundation digital media editor; and Troy Lovata, Trisha Martinez and Levi Romero, all from the University of New Mexico.
“Following the Manito Trail” has been organized and is presented by UW’s American Heritage Center. The exhibition will be on view through Nov. 18 in the UW Art Museum's Boyle Gallery.
“Following the Manito Trail” is an interdisciplinary ethnographic project that documents the Hispanic New Mexican, or Manito, migration from New Mexico to different parts of the United States during the last century. The exhibition considers many sociocultural factors that have allowed Manito culture to endure beyond geographic restraints and contextualizes many aspects of Wyoming life and culture that Manitos have shaped, contributed to and influenced.
For information about the panel discussion, call Leslie Waggener, AHC associate archivist, at (307) 766-6640 or email lwaggen2@uwyo.edu.
