The University of Wyoming debate team is building bridges with high school debaters throughout the state and, in the process, introducing young orators to concepts, strategies and tools to improve their craft.
Matt Liu, UW debate’s new coach, launched Wyoming Debate Roundup just before the new year. The website is dedicated to providing quality debate content to Wyoming high school students.
“We focus on topic analysis and how to build public speaking and argument skills,” Liu says. “Wyoming Debate Roundup is exclusively targeted to Wyoming high school debaters. It's a resource for Wyoming debaters by UW debate coaches and debaters.”
Liu staffs the new site along with three undergraduate members of the debate team -- Jaxon Porterfield, from Sheridan; Ki Radcliffe, from Bentonville, Ark.; and Riley Talamantes, from Boise, Idaho. The team has been making regular updates since the website’s launch and has a bank of additional content for the future.
“We started it to help provide resources to the high school debate community and to raise the profile of the university in that community,” Liu says.
The site already has started garnering feedback from the wider Wyoming debate community.
“Thanks for publishing this,” one reader comments on the site. “It's cool that you're starting this website; it's got me thinking more about arguments for these two months.”
Former debaters also are taking notice.
“This is awesome, helpful and clear,” another commenter writes. “It makes me miss debate so much."
The site can be found at www.wyodebateroundup.weebly.com/ or on Facebook.
