Finalists for the University of Wyoming’s annual Dorothy Jacoby Student Soloist Competition will present a free virtual recital with piano Sunday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m.
The recital will be livestreamed from the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall. To access the concert, go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1hJFuGzTZo&feature=youtu.be.
With UW going virtual for the last few weeks of the spring semester, the UW Symphony Orchestra’s (UWSO) traditional Jacoby concert in May had to be canceled, says UW orchestra Conductor Michael Griffith.
Instead, the competition’s winner -- selected at the recent audition round -- will perform with the UWSO Thursday, March 18. The other finalists will present a Jacoby Finalists’ Recital, which includes the competition’s runner-up, soprano Tamara Caetano, from Barueri, Brazil; and the winner of a special judges’ prize, saxophonist Ben Facundo, of Austin, Texas.
The students performing, along with UW Department of Music faculty members, are:
-- Caetano and Nathália Kato on Handel’s “E pur così in un giorno … Piangerò la sorte mia” from the opera “Giulio Cesare.”
-- Facundo, saxophone, and Yuqing He on Van der Roost’s “Images.”
-- He, from Tianjin, China, piano, and Theresa Bogard on Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 15, movement 3.
-- YunYao Liu, from Beijing, China, piano, and Chi-Chen Wu on Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9, movement 1.
-- Madison Ryan, from Overland Park, Kan., violin, and Kato on Shostakovich’s “Sonata for Violin, Percussion and String Orchestra.”
