UW Libraries to Participate in Streaming Media Study

University of Wyoming Libraries will participate in a study to better understand the educational need for streaming media and improve related services and infrastructure.

Over the next year, UW Libraries will partner with Ithaka S+R, a nonprofit research and consulting group, and a cohort of other academic libraries to assess streaming media usage; solicit faculty member feedback; assess institutional negotiating and collection strategies; and explore streaming media licensing terms.

Other members of the academic library cohort include Georgetown University, Ohio State University and North Carolina State University.

By participating in the cohort, UW Libraries will gain insight on how the university community uses streaming media in research and instruction. Additionally, UW Libraries will help develop new and more financially sustainable strategies for managing and licensing streaming media.

“The importance and usage of streaming media in recent years have exploded, particularly in light of the pandemic. It’s a valuable teaching and learning tool for faculty and students, and UW Libraries is committed to supporting the needs of our academic community,” says Deborah McCarthy, UW Libraries assistant dean of resource discovery and management. “Our partnership with Ithaka S+R, as well as with the other academic library cohort participants, will help us better serve the UW community with streaming media platforms.”

Researchers and instructors with questions about streaming media can call McCarthy at (307) 766-4228 or email mccarthy@uwyo.edu. For more information about educational streaming platforms at UW, visit https://uwyo.libguides.com/media/streaming-video.
