The jazz ensemble One for All is the headliner for the University of Wyoming Department of Music’s Jazz Festival at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 7, in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.
To encourage the next generation of jazz musicians, the festival -- scheduled March 7-8 in the Performing Arts concert and recital halls -- offers middle and high school jazz ensembles noncompetitive performance opportunities and lineup performances from guest artists and clinicians. The festival also will feature the Wyoming All-State Jazz Band, with Peter Sommer on tenor saxophone. Sommer is a professor of saxophone and jazz studies at Colorado State University.
Tickets for the One for All concert are $10 for the public; $7 for senior citizens; $6 for students not attending UW; and free to UW students with a “W” number. UW students will still need to reserve tickets. To purchase tickets, visit the Performing Arts box office, call (307) 766-6666 or go online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.
In 1996, One for All was formed in New York City at the acclaimed jazz club Augie’s, now called the Smoke Jazz Club. Current members are Eric Alexander, Steve Davis, Joe Farnsworth, David Hazeltine, Jim Rotondi and John Webber.
Collectively, the band has forged a sleek sound that has become synonymous with modern jazz. Individually, each member of the group has earned a celebrated reputation not only as a soloist or band leader from solo recordings and tours, but as first-call players in New York City.
The ensemble’s members have played with a broad range of jazz icons throughout the years, such as Jimmy Cobb, George Coleman, Chick Corea, Lou Donaldson, Charles Earland, Jon Faddis, Curtis Fuller, Benny Golson, Johnny Griffin, Slide Hampton, Louis Hayes, Jimmy Heath, Freddie Hubbard, Harold Mabern, Jackie McLean, James Moody, Cecil Payne, Pharoah Sanders, Horace Silver and Cedar Walton.
